West Virginia Council on Problem Gambling

Our first funding was obtained from the West Virginia Lottery Commission. Since that time we have received donations from the West Virginia Amusement & Limited Video Lottery Operators Association and the Problem Gamblers Help Network of WV. These donations allowed us to place resources for families in ten libraries across the state. A Board member also encouraged Ohio County to include 22,000 informational brochures in their 2005 tax mailing. Other Board members have delivered responsible gaming training for industry employees across the state. The West Virginia Council on Problem Gambling was formed to increase public awareness of problem gambling, ensure the widespread availability of treatment for problem gamblers and their families, and to encourage research and programs for prevention and education. We take a neutral stance on gambling as our focus is on the needs of people who may be at risk for or have developed problem gambling behaviors. Our group is comprised of a number of people interested in preventing problems by promoting responsible gaming practices, creating opportunities for early interventions to decrease the problems encountered by people, and ensuring treatment resources are available. Our Board and membership represent human services programs, the gaming industry, law enforcement, institutions of higher learning, professional associations, private citizens, and the community of recovering problem gamblers. The Council was incorporated in December of 2003 and we are a 501©3 non-profit corporation.
